Local Focus: Newport Residents to be Honored on National Philanthropy Day

“The practice of giving money and time to help make life better for other people.”

That’s how Webster’s dictionary defines the word “philanthropy.”

For a local definition, you’d simply find two names listed: Victoria Collins and Natalie Cernius. These two community volunteers are being honored at the 28th annual National Philanthropy Day luncheon being held at Hyatt Regency Irvine on Thursday, November 21.

Orange County Philanthropists to be honored on Nov. 21, in Irvine

ORANGE COUNTY, CA– Submissions are now being accepted by the Orange County Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals for businesses, corporations, schools, nonprofit organizations and individuals for the 2013 National Philanthropy Day Orange County Awards Luncheon, the premier awards ceremony in Orange County honoring businesses, groups and individuals for their outstanding philanthropy in the community.

Submissions must be completed online at https://npdoc.org/submission-form. Deadline for submissions is Friday, May 24, 2013.

Newport Beach teen named National Philanthropy Day O.C. Outstanding Youth

IRVINE, CA– For her dedication to serving the disabled youth population in Orange County, National Philanthropy Day Orange County Outstanding Youth Honoree Natalie Cernius, 18, of Newport Beach, will have the opportunity as Outstanding Youth, for the first time this year, to designate an award of $2,500 from the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Orange County Chapter to the charity of her choice, United Cerebral Palsy of Orange County, at the 28th annual National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon, presented by the Orange County Register, on November 21, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency Irvine in Irvine.

More companies volunteering on the job

On a recent afternoon, a handful of Edwards Lifesciences employees left their desks and confronted their bosses – on the bocce court.

Despite support from more than 100 cheering colleagues, the employees quickly lost to a team of executives, including CEO Michael Mussallem, during a spirited workday tournament at the company’s Irvine campus.

The bocce tournament, designed to generate enthusiasm in a workplace campaign to raise more than $400,000 for the United Way, may not be a typical office activity, but it’s the kind of event that’s becoming more common for Edwards.
