OC lawyer Doug Freeman rallied Washington 30 years ago to create National Philanthropy Day

Nov. 15 marks the 30th annual National Philanthropy Day. In every state in the country, and in Canada and Mexico, philanthropists – big and small, cash donors and volunteers, individuals and companies – will be recognized during November.

And to think, it all got started in Orange County. Thanks to Doug Freeman.

Freeman, 70, is a tax lawyer, founding partner of Freeman, Freeman and Smiley, and now director of trust services and consulting at First Foundation Bank in Irvine. His lifelong work has revolved around advising high-net-worth individuals and families, public and private foundations and nonprofit institutions – with an emphasis on philanthropy.

Philanthropy in Pink: 12-year-old Anika Ortiz raises money for Mariposa Women & Family Center

A breeze rustles pink and white balloons tied with curly ribbons to a sign at a nondescript business park in Orange.

Down the walkway and just outside the doors of Mariposa Women & Family Center, cookies and pink punch await shoppers visiting Anika’s Pink Closet Boutique Experience for Girls.

Inside, a room that a few hours earlier hosted an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting has been transformed into a shopping mecca designed for young girls on a budget.

Local Philanthropist Receives Recognition

The second annual Night at the Ranch fundraiser benefiting the Boys & Girls Club drew more than 250 guests and co-chairs Steve Blue and Leif Hanson reported that over $150,000 was raised last month.

Honoree Hans LaRoche, a 12-year club employee, inspired those in attendance with his passion for his role as the club athletic director.

“Steve and Leif scored another home-run and we couldn’t be more grateful. The money that was raised will touch so many of our kid’s lives through programs we might not otherwise have been able to offer,” said Executive Director Pam Estes.

It took Doug Freeman 40 trips to Washington, D.C. in five years and 4,000 letters to get the job done, and in 1986, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed November 15th as National Philanthropy Day. This November, according to the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), 130 communities across the U.S., Mexico and Canada will honor those who represent the spirit of giving in their regions.

National Philanthropy Day will recognize three Orange residents

At the National Philanthropy Day luncheon, it’s not uncommon to leave with a tear in your eye.

That’s what Mitch Spann, senior co-chair, said of the event recognizing Orange County residents for their outstanding philanthropic services.

“It really is the single largest showcase for the importance of nonprofits in Orange County and beyond,” Spann said. “The event vacillates from total excitement and energy to deep and meaningful stories that are sometimes difficult to get through without having a little bit of a tear in your eye.”
