Ducks honored for their Gift of Giving

ANAHEIM It can be a gesture as simple as a wave to a fan, a Sharpie-scribble of an autograph on a kid’s trading card or a shake of a soldier’s hand.

It can be a visit to children’s hospital bedside, a tour of a military base in the middle of the Mojave desert, a pep talk to a 5-year-old boy shaking in his first pair of skates, or a moment to ask a grandmother, “How are you?” and to listen to her answer.

Top philanthropists of 2009 honored

ANAHEIM – They give when nobody is looking. They help without expecting anything in return. They pick up others because it’s what people are supposed to do for each other.

Those are just some of the traits held by the locals honored Wednesday at the National Philanthropy Day luncheon in Anaheim.

National Philanthropy Day was dreamed up 24 years ago by Doug Freeman, an Irvine-based financial adviser. Since then, more than 1,000 people have been honored for their work in helping others. This year, John and Elizabeth Stahr, of Corona del Mar, were named Lifetime Achievement winners, for their support of nonprofits over the past 40 years.

The man who said ‘thanks’

Doug Freeman spent years saying “please” just to get a “thank you” for America’s most charitable citizens.

“I thought it was such an obvious thing to do,” Freeman said of his long-waged campaign to create National Philanthropy Day, an annual, federally recognized moment to honor philanthropists and not-for-profits.

“What surprised me was that it took so long to convince people that it was appropriate, to acknowledge it.”
