On a recent afternoon, a handful of Edwards Lifesciences employees left their desks and confronted their bosses – on the bocce court.

Despite support from more than 100 cheering colleagues, the employees quickly lost to a team of executives, including CEO Michael Mussallem, during a spirited workday tournament at the company’s Irvine campus.

The bocce tournament, designed to generate enthusiasm in a workplace campaign to raise more than $400,000 for the United Way, may not be a typical office activity, but it’s the kind of event that’s becoming more common for Edwards.
